Malaysia Launches SuRIA Home Program to Boost Residential Solar Adoption

On May 22, 2026, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) launched a new initiative called the Sustainable Rebate & Incentive Assistance (SuRIA) Home program. Announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Amar Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, the program is designed to help Malaysians reduce their electricity costs through the installation of residential rooftop solar systems.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to assist the public in facing the global supply crisis, rising energy costs, and market uncertainties driven by geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, while simultaneously accelerating the nation’s energy transition.

Key Program Highlights

  • Financial Allocation: The government has allocated RM150 million specifically for the SuRIA Home solar rebate initiative.
  • Rebate Structure: Domestic users can receive a rebate of RM600 for every 1kWac of solar installation. The maximum rebate is capped at RM3,000, which is equivalent to 5kWac.
  • Target Reach: The program is anticipated to benefit between 45,000 and 50,000 households across the country.
  • Capacity Goal: The initiative aims to reach an accumulated solar capacity of approximately 250MW.

Eligibility and Timeline

The SuRIA Home program is open to solar installations under the Solar ATAP program that begin operations by December 31, 2026, or until the 250MW quota is fully subscribed, whichever comes first. The implementation of the rebates will officially begin on June 1, 2026, and will operate strictly on a “first come, first served” basis.

To ensure fairness and transparency, the rebate is only available to Malaysian citizens who are Low Voltage (LV) domestic individual consumers. Applicants must have successfully commissioned their Solar ATAP system with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to qualify. It is important to note that claims are limited to once per individual, and consumers who have previously received solar rebates or assistance are not eligible for this program.

Application and Payment Process

  • Eligible users will be notified via the email address registered with TNB to submit their bank account details.
  • Following verification by TNB, the rebate payment will be transferred directly into a local bank account registered under the TNB customer’s name.

Warnings and Long-Term Vision

PETRA has issued a stern warning against the misuse of the program. Any party, including solar providers, found abusing the application systems provided by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia and TNB may face blacklisting from future incentive programs.

The implementation of SuRIA Home reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the energy transition directly reach the people. This aligns with the MADANI aspirations and supports Malaysia’s long-term goal of achieving a 70% renewable energy capacity by the year 2050.
